The night before Catmus
By: Jo Singer, MSW, CSW and LCSW
It was the night before Catmus, and all through our house
not a bug stirred, not even the little white mouse.
All the stockings hung high on our cat tree
hoping that the famous St. Katalous we would finally see again.
Our kitties Aki and Edgar Allen Poe,
patiently awaited the appearance of the great St. Katalous
Both snuggled up warm in their bed
With dreams of freeze-dried turkey treats filling their heads.
But when mom and dad cat came up
Hoping for a good well deserved sleep
the two cats suddenly woke up in pure terror
when they heard a blood-chilling, fur-raising scream.
Suddenly waking up kittens from a deep sleep is not at all wise,
Especially when mom and dad say sleep is a precious prize.
But when they saw that little white mouse scamper across the floor
without hesitation, Poe and Aki zipped through the kitchen door.
Flashing in disbelief, Poe and Aki were shocked at the sight
of that cheeky little white mouse rearing up on its haunches in obvious fright.
He was fully dressed in a red jacket and polished black boots.
Thrown over his shoulder was a huge bag of cat treats; look cute.
Were they dreaming or was the little mouse really decked out in red and black,
Carrying a bundle of nicely wrapped gifts in your well-laden bag?
Was that little rodent huddled in the corner shaking in terror
really a special being who could possibly change their lives forever?
Need to know exactly who he was and the reason for his visit
outstretched paws they slowly approached the mouse to offer it a biscuit
but before they could get closer, the well-dressed mouse began to speak.
And even though he was quite nervous, his messages to the two kittens were incredibly sweet.
“On this special evening, I stop at all the people who love cats
spend time with their kitties to have a very important conversation.
While I disguise myself as a little white mouse disguised as Santa Claws
My true mission is to sprinkle an abundance of love with my little gloved paws.
The Night Before Catmus
Poe and Aki stared at him with their mouths wide open,
while the little white mouse puts on her fancy silver-edged cape.
He gave them a wink and a nod, then jumped into his miniature sled, ready to go.
And as he disappeared in his sleigh into the rays of the moon, they heard him cry out:
“I am the great Saint Kitalous living in your hearts, spreading unconditional love – after all; Isn’t that what it’s all about?
