The photo of the “Amazon snake cat” is hard to believe. A viral social media post claimed that the cat, known as “Serpens Catus,” is the rarest feline species on the planet, living in remote areas of the Amazon rainforest and weighing up to 25 kilograms. However, a now-deleted Reddit post pointed out that the cat may not be real, and several commenters agreed. The feline has black and neon-yellow stripes that resemble those of a snake, making it a fascinating and intriguing subject.
The “Amazon snake cat” is a supposed feline species that gained attention on social media due to a viral photo showing a black and neon-yellow striped feline with a resemblance to a snake. However, the authenticity of the species has been called into question, and experts have yet to confirm its existence.
Several commenters noticed that the “Serpens Cattus” feline was not real and flagged it as a fake after a Reddit post about it was deleted. One commenter pointed out that no known gene could produce the natural hair or fur colors of navy and bright yellow. Another commenter noted that the Latin name was a poorly attempted fake and could have been made less obvious with a quick Google search about species naming.
To verify the authenticity of the photo, The Post contacted zoology experts. The color and patterns in the image resemble those of the Boiga dendrophila, also known as the “gold-ringed cat snake.” This snake is found in the same countries where the “Amazon snake cat” was reportedly discovered, according to the Smithsonian’s National Zoo & Conservation Biology Institute.
The alleged “serpent cat” gained attention on TikTok, where one user claimed that the species could be found in several South American countries, including Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Guyana, French Guiana, and Suriname.
